Nick Hillman Meets Caroline Spelman

Nick Hillman, Conservative PPC, met Caroline Spelman (Shadow Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government) during her attendance at a Conservative event in Cambridge, covering What Can We Do For Your Business in 2010?

Caroline was a speaker at the event and shared some thoughts in regards to the Conservative policies for local development with Nick Hillman.

Nick said “Caroline mentioned the massive benefits for Cambridge with the Matched Central Funding plan, which will add new money for Local Government to use to build proper infrastructure, roads and services for new homes”. Nick also added “This is practical and realistic finance for local people that will not happen unless we see a Conservative Government in place.”

Other aspects of the speech by Caroline covered: -
  • Conservatives support a Business Rate holiday
  • Conservatives will introduce new powers for Local Authorities to raise money for new projects from Local Bonds, to build roads and other infrastructure
  • Plans are advanced to replace development agencies (RDAs such as EEDA) with Local Economic Partnerships, with a fundamental difference in that the control will be made up from 50/50 Business Leadership and Business Chairmen
  • In the first year of a Conservative Government, a Bill will be passed for Open Local Government. This will allow District and County Councillors to work with and operate an Open Strategic Plan
